Chapter Ten

It was midafternoon by the time Jade, Shawna, and I had finished lunch and questioning Priscilla before she disappeared. Her memory of what transpired had been good, but the clues we’d obtained still weren’t enough to figure out who had wanted her dead and why.

We decided the best place to find most of the suspects on our list was back at the expo. As we walked past the reception desk on our way to the building across the street, I heard a male voice calling Shawna’s name. We all turned at the same time and spotted Nate, Bryce, and Myra entering the hotel’s lobby through the front doors.

“Nate?” Shawna sounded as surprised as I was to see them. Even so, I glared at the group, then whispered as I leaned toward her. “Did you tell your boyfriend about you know who or where he could find us?”

“No, I swear.”

“Then what are they doing here?” Jade asked, not happy to see our unexpected guests any more than I was, even if Bryce was her brother.

In comparison to Nate and Bryce, Myra was the shortest one in the group. Though they all wore jeans beneath their winter coats, Myra’s red hair, green eyes, and freckles made her more noticeable. Or maybe I noticed her more readily because she rarely smiled, lacked a sense of humor, and always scowled whenever she was around me. Of the three of them, she’d been the most skeptical after learning about my ghost seeing ability.

“It’s not Shawna’s fault we showed up.” Nate swept a hand through his sandy brown hair as he sauntered up to us. “I heard about Priscilla Pottsworth’s death from a friend who lives in town. We figured since you guys were staying at the same hotel…”

“There might be some paranormal activity,” Bryce finished for him. “And we decided to make the trip in case you needed our help.”

Jade placed her hands on her hips, her blue eyes drilling into her brother. “You do understand the meaning of a girl’s weekend out, right? That means no boyfriends, no family members,”—she included Myra and Nate when she glared at Bryce—“or club members allowed.”

The club Jade was referring to was the Supernatural Spoof Squashers. Bryce had organized the group to investigate all things supernatural. Their entire membership was standing in front of us. I knew my father associated with the group, but I had yet to confirm my suspicion that he was an honorary member.

The spoofers, as Jade, Shawna, and I referred to them, were already upset with us because we’d investigated Evelyn Fullbright’s death over Halloween without them. Not that we had any kind of understanding or were obligated to ask for their assistance.

Bryce held up his hands. “We didn’t come here to infringe on your girl’s weekend. We came to help. If you tell us nothing happened, and Rylee hasn’t gotten a visitor, then we’ll leave the hotel right now.”

Jade might not be happy about the intrusion, but her quirked brow was her way of letting me know she’d support whatever decision I made.
